The inimitable Frankie Dettori put a turbulent few days behind him with victory aboard Lezoo at Newmarket on Saturday.
The 51-year-old was taking his first mount since long-standing associate John Gosden, who trains in partnership with son Thady, had announced that the pair had agreed to take a “sabbatical” from their working relationship.
Dettori did not let the off-course drama impact his racetrack performance though, as he delivered Lezoo with a perfectly-timed challenge to win going away by a length and three-quarters.
The rider received plenty of cheers on his way back to the winner’s enclosure and treated the crowd to one of his trademark flying dismounts on what was his first ride since the end of Royal Ascot.

As a U.S horse owner and lifelong racing fan that follows the big races in the U.K every year I see Frankie Dettori as a polarizing figure in the entire world of racing, whether we
love him or loathe him his class as a rider can never be questioned with so many big wins around the globe. As soon as it was said that he would be available to ride for other racing stables (since the “sabbatical” with Gosden) I’m sure there were ton’s of owners and trainers hoping he would be available to them. What better way to upset a big favourite horse from a big stable then by putting up a first ballot Hall of Fame jockey?
I ride some of the leading riders at my track and I wouldn’t give Frankie a back seat to any of them, particularly if it’s a big race. Will never be forgotten when he retires in a couple of years, that is for sure
Simply still the best jockey in the business. Form can be temporary but class is permanent.
