When it comes to hitting solid volleys in tennis, there are a few fundamentals that you must master.
Tennis Volley Swings – The swing on your tennis volleys will either help or hinder your net game. One of the most common problems tennis players face when they’re at the net is being able to time the volleys correctly.
Since we have roughly half the time at the net, when compared to the baseline, many players struggle with timing on their forehand and backhand volleys.
In order to fix this issue, it’s vital that we shorten the swings on our volleys.
Imagine catching a ball, keep that same motion when you hit your volleys.
Reach forward with the racket, meeting the ball out in front of your body.
Tennis Volley Footwork – One of the fundamentals of being a solid net player is being able to cover the net efficiently and effectively. Using the correct footwork patterns is key.
When the ball is close to you, one lunge step is sufficient.
When the ball is slightly wider, two steps will be needed.
Where To Aim Your Volleys – When dealing with medium to low height volleys, and when you cannot hit them away for a winner, aim your volleys down the line and use it as a second approach shot. When you have a higher ball, you can start to use the width of the court and put the volleys away using crosscourt shots.

Well put together video, volleys are so important to learn!
Here is a recommendation for the future videos:
1. Record and present tutorials on some play strategies that players level 3.5-4.5 could use in tournaments. This is something that very few focus on, and it s fundamental to happy tennis life.
2. Record and comment your own tournament plays
3. Publish series of videos on how can players advance their levels of play (for example, most players never advance past NRTP 3.5, so it would be good to have a video or series of videos focused on guiding what it takes to advance a level)
Hi Simon – Great video as usual. I use the same racquet as you, and was wondering what strings you find work well with it? Iโm currently using Volkl Cyclone Tour. Thanks!
nice review
1. Catch the ball on the strings
2. 2 step footwork
3. Low balls DTL, high volleys xcourt
Thanks coach.
Thanks for the 1-step vs 2-step distinction, Simon! I've had perhaps 100 volley lessons and no one has so simply described that moment of choice.
Another fabulously clear and helpful step-by-step instructional video. I teach at the University. And this is definitely an A+ – and without grade inflation.
I disagree with your footwork. I teach step out with outside foot while pushing off with the other. I arrive quicker and better position to hit accurate
What can we do if our backhand volleys are way weaker than our forehand volleys?
Very helpful, thanks. Can you do one for doubles volleys? When already at net, what to do when comes fast and hard at your body, not beside you? Where best to aim when there are two people to get past, etc.? Basics are the same, but must be some differences.
would love to see more lessons with active drills included. It's nice to see it inaction and understand what you're trying to do on court. But don't know how to go about practicing it. Also home exercises or drills for those who can't spend as many hours or days on court.
Stepping is dependent on where you want to place ball. It is not arbitrary
Fantastic advice that is logical and easy to understand. I plan to use this ASAP since I miss "easy" short balls often.
We would like to see serve volley lesson or inside out/in lesson with some drills coach
Very well organized lesson. When offered a high volley, I'm going to try thinking "cross court," rather than "KILL IT!" I botch too many easy finishes.
