The Legend of the Dwarves of Simonside
The dwarves of Simonside are different from the dwarves in other fantasy stories. They cannot drink, joke or sing. These dwarves will run up the mountains with lamps, and their light will guide lonely travelers to their demise. The story warns people that dwarves and lights will disappear at dawn. People must remember that there is a swamp here. If you leave the trail, you will face eternal danger. Many documents have recorded the deeds of this dwarf, and the Newcastle News once mentioned their legend, saying that it is dangerous for a lonely wanderer to come to the ugly tribe of elves and dwarves.
Once a man’s journey to Rosebery took much longer than he expected, so he had to find a place to spend the night in the wild. The man was overjoyed when a hut appeared in the uninhabited wilderness, and he immediately went in to spend the night. In this hut, there was a dying fire, two stones and two doorposts. The man then sat on one of the stones and added wood to the flames.
After a while, a short figure staggered into the house, ignored the man beside him, and sat directly on another stone. This sudden development confused the man. After a moment of silence, the man realized that the flame was going out again, so he took a piece of wood, broke it off, and threw it into it. At this time the dwarf glared at him, took one of the doorposts, broke it with his knee and threw it into the fire. The man realized that his action had angered the other party, so he had to remain silent, and the flames went out. Dare to add wood again.
Unknowingly, the man fell asleep sitting on the stone. When he woke up again, it was already the next morning. At this time, he discovered that the hut where he stayed last night, the fire in the house, and the dwarf had all disappeared without a trace. What frightened the man most was that the rock he was sitting on was actually on the edge of a towering cliff. If he had moved an inch last night, he would have easily fallen to his death.
Another story tells of a man who deliberately sought out the Simonside dwarves in order to prove that such creatures did not exist. At that time, this man entered the wilderness and shouted a noun related to “light”. As if in response to his call, a ray of light appeared in the wilderness. Seeing this, the man moved some distance toward the light, then threw a piece of soil into the swamp, and the light disappeared.
This act of discovery was fooling the dwarf into wanting to try again. This time, as soon as he shouted, a group of Simonside dwarves suddenly appeared and surrounded him. Each dwarf had a lit torch and a stick in his hand. This frightened him and he wanted to rush out from among the dwarves. During the process, he didn’t feel that he touched anything and passed directly through the crowd of dwarves. They all disappeared without a trace, making him think that he had won.
Before the man could react, a group of dwarves appeared again, and the number was larger than before, making him so frightened that he fainted on the spot. When he woke up again, the sun had risen, the group of dwarves had disappeared, and he was able to return home safely.
