Another Formula 1 race, another controversial clash between Formula 1 title rivals Max Verstappen and Lando Norris – only this time it was Verstappen who got penalised, and heavily too, as Norris declared Verstappen’s driving “dangerous”.
For McLaren, this will probably feel like justice finally done – as the team believed strongly that Verstappen should have been sanctioned during the United States Grand Prix for forcing Norris off the track during their late-race battle for third place.
The team felt so aggrieved they launched a right of review petition, asking F1’s stewards to reconsider their decision to penalise Norris five seconds for overtaking Verstappen off-track at Turn 12.
That petition ultimately failed, but it kept the issue of F1’s racing guidelines, and what constitutes fair driving, very much in the spotlight during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend – and change is now surely coming after the drivers met with the FIA and agreed to discuss alterations to F1’s racing guidelines at the Qatar Grand Prix in December.
Meanwhile, Verstappen and Norris stress-tested the limits of the current rules again.
