Peng Dehuai’s letter asking for help was so miserable that it made people cry but did not move Mao. Peng Dehuai and Mao Zedong. (Picture source: Internet picture)
In late December 1966, two teams of Red Guards from Beijing rushed to Chengdu, Sichuan with murderous intent.Peng DehuaiMarshal seizes backBeijingthrown into a dilapidated simple workhouse. From then on, Peng Dehuai began a miserable eight years of being imprisoned, criticized, censored, and tortured, until the fire of his life was extinguished.
There may be two situations: one is that Mao Zedong secretly instructed Jiang Qing and sent people to arrest Peng; the other is that Jiang Qing urged to arrest Peng and let the central government hold a meeting to make a decision, and Mao agreed. No matter what the situation, Mao Zedong was the mastermind behind dragging Peng Dehuai to Beijing for criticism and struggle. However, Mao remained silent behind the scenes, leaving Jiang Qing to call the shots from the front. This way you can distance yourself and avoid the suspicion of being “capricious, cruel and ruthless”. Once the situation changes in the future, you can move forward and retreat freely, and always maintain the glorious image of “great and correct”.
On December 25, 1966, the anniversary of the birth of Jesus, Peng Dehuai was imprisoned in a dilapidated and bitterly cold simple workhouse, and he lost his personal freedom ever since. The People’s Liberation Army soldiers only carried out orders and kept strict watch, but the young Red Guard general rushed in aggressively, giving him a taste of the “dictatorship of the proletariat.” They scolded him angrily and asked some random questions, asking him to answer honestly, but they were impatient to listen to his answers, as if they were trying to give him a blow. These cute-looking student dolls, wearing red armbands and green military uniforms, all looked fierce, calling “old bastards” and “old counterrevolutionaries” and threatening to “crush your head!” and “beat you to death!” and continued chaos. Going through his bag, breaking his pipe, taking his medicine, and pushing him violently.
Peng Dehuai angrily scolded them for not following the policy, but they laughed and said: “For people like you, we have to fight with force!” This marshal who commanded thousands of troops and horses on the battlefield and was all-powerful really experienced the feeling of “a tiger falling flat and being bullied by a dog” “Taste.
In pain and anger, he thought of Chairman Mao: Chairman Mao, you sent me to Sichuan. Just one year ago, before I could achieve anything, I was captured by the Red Guards and taken to Beijing. I was imprisoned, suffered humiliation, and was on the verge of danger. Now, whether you live or die, it all depends on what you say! So he wrote a letter to Mao Zedong without hesitation:
You appointed me to the Third Front Construction Committee, but apart from serving as the third deputy director, I did not hold any other job, which failed to live up to your expectations. On the evening of December 22 (according to research, it should be the early morning of the 25th), he was captured by the Red Guards of the Beijing Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Chengdu branch of the ministry. On the 23rd, he was transferred to the Dongfanghong Red Guards of the Beijing Institute of Geology and escorted to Beijing on the 27th. He is now He was imprisoned in the custody of the Central Security Forces and the Red Guards. One last salute to you! Wish you long life and endless life!
Peng Dehuai January 1, 1967
This letter, written to Mao Zedong on New Year’s Day, is only a little over 100 words long. It seems simple and plain, but under certain circumstances it has extremely rich connotations: it not only reports on my experience from last year to the present according to Chairman Mao’s arrangements, but also explains what I am doing now. He was in a critical situation and revealed the person who captured and guarded him; he not only expressed his apology and respect for Chairman Mao, but also hinted at his intention to plead with Mao Zedong to rescue him from danger. He may have thought of what Chairman Mao said to him face to face at the Yi Niantang last year: If anything happens, you can make a phone call or write a note. So this time, if there is an urgent “matter”, I won’t write a long letter but a short note! This is not an ordinary report or exchange of feelings, but an urgent letter asking for help!
He always naively believed that it must be a group of lawless Red Guards who caught him in Beijing and threw him into prison. Chairman Mao must not have known about it. Chairman Mao would be furious when he saw this letter and ordered the Red Guards to Free yourself.

In the long masterpiece “This Is Peng Dehuai” written by Guo Chen published in 2002, it is described as follows:
“After Peng Dehuai finished writing the letter, he read it again, then folded the letter and put it in his spectacle case. During lunch, when he saw that there were no rebels in front of him, he quietly handed it to the little sentry and asked him to hand it over. The letter was transferred from the custody point and passed to Zhou Enlai after layers of inspections. Zhou Enlai was afraid that if he handed it over, it would be lost, so he publicly read the letter at the Central Committee meeting and gave instructions in the letter: “It has been read out at the meeting and will be sent to the Chairman, Comrade Lin Biao, and Comrade Jiang Qing (who left the meeting first) for circulation.” It is planned to withdraw from Peng Dehuai’s project group. ‘After Chairman Mao read the letter, he approved it for Kang Sheng to keep, but in the end it disappeared…”
In short, it is certain that Mao Zedong had seen this letter for help. The words “One last salute to you” were so miserable that they made people cry. They did not move him. Not only did he not issue instructions to rescue Peng Dehuai, but he approved the letter to Kang Sheng, who was good at bullying and ruthless. This fully shows that Mao Zedong dragged Peng Dehuai from Sichuan to Beijing this time in order to knock him to the ground completely and put another foot on him so that he would never be able to stand up again!
Moreover, it was fully exposed that what he said in Zhongnanhai in 1965, “The truth may be by your side,” was actually a smoke screen; “I asked you to go to the Third Southwest Front sincerely,” but in fact it was insincere and hypocritical. First put him in Sichuan, let him continue to “spread poison” in Sichuan, and then let the Red Guards take him to Beijing for ruthless criticism and struggle. It was completely a good show carefully designed and directed by Mao Zedong and carried out by others!
The most painful, miserable and humiliating tragedy in Peng Dehuai’s life is about to begin!
