There was a gentleman in Hefei, Anhui, who had a rich family and was good at sociability. He opened pawn shops, antique shops, banks, etc., and his business was very prosperous.
One year, he printed ten new banknotes. After printing, the manager invited the gentleman to the printing room to review it. The manager took out a bundle and handed it to the gentleman for inspection. The gentleman took one out and looked at it carefully in the sunshine at the door. After reading it, he placed it on the table next to the door.
Unexpectedly, a gust of wind blew at this time, blowing the big note into the air. So the manager asked the apprentice to climb a ladder to the roof to look for him, but there was no trace of him. There are high walls around the house, so the wind will not blow outside. The gentleman thought this was strange and asked the manager to write down the number on the big note.
Two years later, a mason took the money note and cashed it. The manager saw that it was the big note that had been blown away by the wind, so he immediately took him to the gentleman’s home.
The gentleman asked the mason to sit down in the living room, and then asked him: “How did you get the money?” The mason said: “I polished it.” The gentleman said: “It’s just a grinding plate for others. How could they give you this big ticket worth ten strings of coins for one or two hundred cents?”
The gentleman kept asking questions, and the mason became impatient. The gentleman explained that something strange had happened to the bill, and he wanted to find out. Upon hearing this, the stonemason said truthfully: “I polished it for the underworld, and the King of Hell gave it to me.”
The gentleman was very surprised when he heard this and asked: “How did you go to the underworld to polish it?”
The stonemason said that more than ten days ago he met two businessmen, who took him to a strange city and then took him to the lobby of a large official palace. An official sat in the hall and said solemnly: “You have to polish it well for three days. If you do well, I will give you more money at that time; if you do not do well, be careful to punish you.”
Then, the two tolerants took him to the mill. A large mill appeared in front of him, which shocked him. He had never seen such a big mill. He continued to grind for two days. Later, he gradually became familiar with the two tolerance workers and asked them what they were grinding for.
The official said, “I told you, but you can’t tell the other person!” The mason agreed not to tell. The official said: “Let me tell you, this is a grinder for people. This is the underworld! After you finish grinding this grinder, you must first grind three people with it: the first one will grind the cow-killer outside the east gate first; the second one will grind the cow-killer outside the east gate.” Official Mo…” At this point, the mason stopped talking.
The gentleman asked again and again: “Who else is grinding?” Because the gentleman pressed on and asked, the mason had to tell the truth: “I heard that the third person to grind is you.”
The gentleman was shocked and asked why. The mason said, “I heard from the two businessmen that on August 15th, you did…” After the mason finished speaking, he saw beads of sweat rolling down the gentleman’s head like soybeans.
The stonemason continued: “After I finished polishing, the two public servants took me to see the high official. He gave me a ten string of money each. Then he ordered the two public servants to take me home.”
After hearing this, the gentleman said: “You must never tell anyone else about this matter. Don’t polish it again in the future. In addition to giving you ten strings of money, I will also give you another two hundred taels of silver to use for small business!” If there is any shortage in the future and the turnover is not smooth, you can come to me directly.”
The mason agreed repeatedly, took the money, thanked him and left.
The gentleman recalled that on August 15th of a certain year, in order to seize his ally’s treasure, he got him drunk, tied him up, pushed him into a garden well, and killed him. He himself took his ally’s treasures as his own and became rich instantly.
Now after hearing what the mason said, I was so frightened that I felt restless day and night. He built a quiet room in the back garden, set up a spiritual place for his brother, burned incense day and night, and repented and prayed: “I would like to use all my property to do good deeds, and all of them will be regarded as your merits, brother!”
Therefore, the gentlemen set up porridge factories, gave up cotton-padded clothes, helped the poor, built Taoist temples, and helped Buddhist temples. Within half a year, the assets of his antique shop were sold and given away.
At this time, he heard that the owner of the cattle slaughter outside the east gate had his foot trampled by the cattle and began to swell and bleed. All treatments were ineffective and he complained of pain day and night. He died soon after. Later, I heard that when a high-ranking official was shaving his head, he accidentally cut a hot prickly heat with the razor, which caused bleeding. Half a year later, it festered from head to toe, and he finally died.
When the gentleman heard this, he was even more frightened, so he became more active in doing good deeds. He thought to himself: I might as well take out all my property to do good deeds before I die now and before the punishment comes. Later, he freed himself to eat fast, worked harder for good deeds, and repented more sincerely. After another two years of this, two-thirds of his property had been used up.
One night, the mason suddenly came to visit. The gentleman hurriedly invited him in and asked him what happened.
The stonemason said: “I came here to bring you good news. You don’t have to be afraid. The underworld will not torture you! Last night, the two underworld messengers told me in my dream that they were punished by the underworld official for leaking the secret. I was punished and whipped for my confession. Repenting and doing good deeds, they have made meritorious deeds invisibly. The underworld has promoted them both. They were about to take office last night. They came here to tell me and asked me to tell you that because you can repent and do good deeds, I will not torture you anymore. , asking you to continue doing good deeds and accumulating virtue.”
The gentleman finally let go of his uneasy heart, but he was still pious and good. Finally, he lived to be seventy years old and died a good death.
