Liu Zongyuan (773-819 AD), a litterateur of the Tang Dynasty, was one of the eight famous writers of the Tang and Song Dynasties. He had a high status in the history of ancient Chinese literature and philosophy. He loved Buddhism all his life and advocated a religious life of “obeying the teachings of diligent saints and respecting rituals and rituals”. He once said: “I have loved Buddhism since I was a child, and I have been pursuing his path for thirty years.” He wrote many famous articles, including “The Legend of Banishing the Dragon”, which truthfully recorded a real magical event. The full text is now translated as follows:
Located in Fufeng, Shaanxi Province, there is a young man named Ma. He once told me (referring to Liu Zongyuan himself) this: when he was fifteen or sixteen years old, he was still in Zezhou, Shanxi Province. One day, he and a group of children were playing in a pavilion in the suburbs. Suddenly, there was a flash of light, and a strange woman fell from the sky to the ground. She was wearing a black and red leather coat with a white lining, and a walking crown on her head.
The young master from a wealthy family who was playing nearby also discovered her. Seeing her smooth face and extraordinary beauty, he felt happy and went up to try to talk to her. His words were not very solemn. The woman said angrily: You can’t do this! I live in the Imperial Palace of Juntian, and I often go up and down among the stars. Even Kunlun and Penglai, I hold a contemptuous attitude and disdain to go there. The Emperor of Heaven thought that my heart was too arrogant, so he was angry and demoted me to the human world to be punished. After seven days, I can still return to heaven. Although I am trapped and humiliated in the mortal world now, I am definitely not your partner, otherwise I will definitely bring disaster to you when I go back.
When the young master and his party heard this, they were all frightened and immediately backed away. The young man named Ma followed her from a distance and saw the woman entering the lecture hall of a Buddhist temple. On the seventh day, the young man named Ma looked curiously and found that the woman appeared again. She took out a glass of water from the Buddhist hall, and then breathed into the water glass. The water in the glass immediately turned into colorful clouds and rose. She put on the black and red leather jacket with white lining and turned it back into a white dragon, soaring into the clouds and mist, circling and flying over the Buddhist temple, flying higher and higher, reaching the sky, flying to no one knows where. This is really surprising. It can be seen that even those gods who were relegated to the mortal world are not something that mortals on earth can offend. The young man named Ma was not a liar, so I, Liu Zongyuan, wrote down this story.
Nowadays, when people study Liu Zongyuan’s works, out of atheism, they forcefully interpret “The Legend of Banning the Dragon” as a fable made up by the author. In fact, Liu Zongyuan had already clearly pointed out in the article that “a boy does not lie, so he records his words.” That is to say, it was precisely because this young man was honest in nature and not a liar that he recorded the matter. It can be seen that gods and various high-level beings including dragons exist, and atheism is a completely wrong heresy. “The Theory of Banishing the Dragon” is proof of this.
In “The Legend of Banishing the Dragon”, the woman who turned into a dragon and returned was originally a very powerful being in heaven. She was demoted to earth for seven days because of her arrogance. It can be seen that any life that makes a mistake must be punished accordingly. , good and evil will be rewarded. During these seven days, she stayed at the Buddhist temple. She thought that she might have relied on the power of Buddhism to return to heaven.
The original text of “The Theory of Banning the Dragon”:
Fufeng Ma Ruzi said: At fourteen or five o’clock in the year, I was playing with a group of children in a suburban pavilion in Zezhou. There was a bright light, and in a moment a strange woman fell to the ground. She was buried in white clothes and her first step shook her crown. When you are young, you are happy with it, and you are a little embarrassed. Nu Er said angrily: “No! I am staying in the Juntian Emperor’s palace, where the stars are up and down, I am ashamed of Kunlun, and I am humbled by Penglai, and I am not here. The emperor thinks that my heart is extravagant, and he banishes me in anger. I will come back in seven days. Although I am here now In the humiliating dust, I am not like Ruo Li. I will harm Ruo Ruo again.” Everyone retreated in fear. Then he entered the lecture room of the Buddhist temple. When the time comes, take a cup of water, and it will turn into clouds, with five colors. Then he took its fur and turned it around, turning it into a white dragon and flying up to the sky without knowing where it was going. It was very strange. Alas! It is inappropriate to banish someone who is not of his kind. The boy does not mislead others, so he records his words.
