Peng Jiamu, born in Guangdong Province in 1925, graduated from the Department of Agricultural Chemistry, College of Agriculture, National Central University, in 1947, and then served as a teaching assistant at the College of Agriculture, Peking University. In 1949, he worked as an assistant at the Institute of Physiology and Biochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was later promoted to assistant researcher. Since the 1950s, Peng Jiamu has participated in many Xinjiang inspections by the Comprehensive Investigation Committee of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and is committed to assisting in the establishment of scientific research bases. He led the establishment of the Xinjiang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which greatly promoted the development of local scientific research. He served as associate researcher and researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1961, and concurrently served as president of the Xinjiang Branch in 1979.
In May 1980, scientist Peng Jiamu led an expedition team to Lop Nur for field investigation. This was a very challenging expedition. They crossed the bottom of the dry Lop Nur lake from north to south for the first time. Along the way, the car frequently got stuck in soft river beds and moving sand dunes, and the food, water and fuel on board were even more scarce. The harsh environment made it difficult for the entire team to move. On June 17, due to an emergency water source, Peng Jiamu decided to go east alone to search for Well, he left a brief note: “I will go east to find a well.” This trip became his eternal farewell. The expedition team waited for many days but found no trace of Peng Jiamu, and the search and rescue operations did not bring any news. The scientist’s disappearance quickly became a national sensation.
There are different opinions on the cause of Peng Jiamu’s disappearance. Some people believe that he may have lost his way and was eventually buried in the desolate desert; others have put forward other speculations-maybe he was attacked by unknown forces? For decades, numerous official and private search efforts have come to nothing. Just in 2005, a mummy was discovered in the Kumtag Desert on the edge of Lop Nur. The outside world speculated that this was Peng Jiamu. However, the official denied this statement. Until 2016, a document called the “Case Diary” was quietly circulated on the Internet. It is said that the diary was written by a late forensic doctor surnamed Deng. The case handling diary revealed that during the 2005 mummy investigation, two bodies were actually found, one of which was Peng Jiamu. Shockingly, the diary implies that Peng Jiamu’s death was not natural but homicide. The person who published this diary is also a forensic doctor, signed “Zhu Mingchuan”. One of his books: “Forensic Medicine Research Institute” records a story called “The Lop Nur Mummy Case”, which is similar to the plot of Peng Jiamu’s disappearance. conform to. However, it is still unclear whether “Zhu Mingchuan” is a pseudonym or a real person. As for Peng Jiamu’s disappearance, was it an accident? Or a conspiracy? The answer is as unfathomable as the bottom of the dry lake in Lop Nur.
About the mysterious incident in Lop Nur
Lop Nur Desert is a famous dry land in the world. Lop Nur was once a large lake. People called it “Wandering Lake”. Due to the instability of the lake water, it often disappeared inexplicably. This change made Lop Nur go from desert to lake, and then from lake to desert again. , several changes have allowed countless ancient civilizations to rise by the lake, but also disappeared due to the invasion of yellow sand. The ancient city of Loulan is a typical example. It mysteriously disappeared about 1,600 years ago. Until 2017, archaeologists found an ancient city ruins on the north bank of the Kongque River near Lop Nur. After carbon-14 dating, they found that this may be the ancient city of Loulan from the Eastern Han Dynasty! As for the reason for the disappearance of the ancient city of Loulan, there is still no conclusion yet. Some scholars speculate that as Lop Nur gradually dried up, lack of water became the main reason, eventually leading to Loulan’s demise.
In fact, since 1949, mysterious incidents have occurred in Lop Nur one after another. A plane once disappeared over Turpan. Nine years later, the wreckage was found deep in Lop Nur. No one on board survived. No one can explain how it flew over a distance of more than 200 kilometers and was eventually buried in this desert.
In 1950, a People’s Liberation Army guard disappeared mysteriously. More than thirty years later, his body was found in Hongliugou, a hundred kilometers away from the place where he disappeared. As for how he crossed the boundless desert, no one knows.
In the summer of 1995, three farm workers disappeared while driving a jeep to Lop Nur to hunt for treasure. The bodies of two of them were later found, but the third one seemed to have evaporated and his whereabouts are unknown. Miraculously, the car was intact and had plenty of water and fuel.
In 1996, the death of Yu Chunshun once again pushed Lop Nur to the peak of public opinion. Yu Chunshun is an experienced explorer. He cooperated with the TV station to plan the supply station in advance and arranged for the camera crew to follow the entire process. In theory, the risks of this trip have been minimized. However, unexpectedly, on the last day, Yu Chunshun insisted on leaving the team and chose to go alone. Search and rescue crews found his body five days later. He eventually collapsed less than 500 meters away from the supply station. For an explorer with a strong ability to survive in the wild, such an ending is unbelievable. What exactly made Yu Chunshun lose his way?
