Japan’s aging situation is serious. In addition to the complicated levels of care and job classification, there is a Shiba Inu named Bunfuku in Kanagawa, Japan, who was adopted from a senior center before he was about to be euthanized. Whenever an elderly person is about to pass away, Wenfu seems to have the ability to “predict” and will immediately stay with them until they complete the last journey of their life. Therefore, he has become an important helper in the hospice care of the elderly center.
According to the Nippon Sankei Shimbun report, in 2012, Wenfu, who was about to be euthanized, came to the nursing center. One day, the staff found him standing in front of an elderly person’s room with his head lowered. What people didn’t expect was that the elderly man passed away the next day, and Wenfu jumped on the bed and licked the elderly man’s cheek, as if he was reluctant to say goodbye to him, not wanting to leave no matter what the staff said.
Determine the status of occupants by smell
The person in charge of the facility, Wakayama Sanchihiko, said that Bunfuku has taken care of more than 10 residents so far. It is said that 2 to 3 days before the death of the resident, Bunfuku would remain still outside the resident’s room with his head bowed. And enter the resident’s room the next day or a few days later, and look up at the resident’s face from the bedside. When a resident dies, Wenfu will even jump on the resident’s bed and gently accompany him or her as he takes his last breath.
Wakayama said that when many people hear this, they may think it has no scientific basis. He and other staff also find it incredible, and only Wenfu in the facility has this magical ability. He speculated that it was because Wenfu was almost euthanized when he was in the health center in the past. Fortunately, the animal protection group arrived in time and took Wenfu away. He believed that it was the terrible experience in the past that allowed Wenfu to acquire alternative care skills.
It is worth mentioning that a nearly 90-year-old man living in the Wenfu care area has been declared by doctors to have only one week left to live and his consciousness is unclear. But he remembered that he worked at the Sashima fishing port near the elderly center and was a fisherman. When he was unconscious, the word “Sashima” was what he said in his sleep.
Keiko Deda suggested that before the old fisherman died, he should take the old fisherman back to Sajima Fishing Port to have a look. However, at the staff meeting of the senior citizen center, someone took into account the old fisherman’s physical condition and believed that going out would cause a physical burden and must be cautious.
Deda Keiko then said, if Wenfu did not start the final care, how about taking the old fisherman out? As a result, everyone agreed, and the old fisherman, with the help of his daughter, nurse and others, visited the fishing port full of memories again.
The old fisherman’s health condition, which was once worrisome during this trip, was stable. Six days after the trip to the fishing port, he embarked on another journey peacefully with Wen Fu’s care and the company of his family.
Wenfu’s story was also written into a book by Ruoshan, which was republished this year.
It is reported that the second floor of “Sakura no Sato Yamashina” allows dogs and cats to live with senior citizens, or senior citizens who do not own dogs or cats but want to live with dogs and cats. This floor is divided into 4 areas and currently houses 10 dogs and 9 cats.
