The Four Great Classical Chinese Novelsjourney to the west》 is a story that everyone is familiar with. The book uses a lot of some verymysteryofnumber. for example:Sun WukongA somersault can turn a thousand miles, Sun Wukong can change seventy-two times,Tang MonkThe master and apprentice have gone through the August 1st disaster, Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel weighs 13,500 kilograms, and the number of days Tang Monk spent to obtain scriptures is 5048. These seemingly random numbers are all the author’s thoughts, and ordinary people may see them. It’s just a wonderful story of seeking scriptures from the West, and only those who are well versed in spiritual practice or sensitive to numbers can see the numerical code behind it.
Difficulties of ninety-nine and eighty-one
The nine-nine-nine-eighty-one tribulations refer to the various tribulations Tang Monk and his disciples encountered on the way to obtain the scriptures. Anyone who has read Journey to the West knows that when Tang Monk obtained the scriptures, he just experienced the eighty tribulations. When he thought he had reached perfection, Unexpectedly, Guanyin Bodhisattva said that there was still one more difficulty to overcome. As a result, when crossing the Tongtian River, the old turtle failed to fulfill his promise and was overturned in the rapid river. Why did Tang Monk have to go through ninety-nine and eighty-one difficulties, even one less one would not be enough? “Nine-nine returns to the true state” was originally a Taoist saying. “Nine” is related to practice. “Nine-nine counts are completed and the demons are extinguished. Three or three lines are completed and the Tao returns to the root.” There is also a saying of “complete merits and virtues”, as shown in the Tao Te Ching 80 One chapter, after eighty-one difficulties, was finally completed. Buddhists also have a similar concept, believing that Buddha nature is the root of this. Journey to the West is a classic that combines Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, so it will borrow Taoist quotations to express Buddhist wisdom.
In “Journey to the West”, Sun Wukong can change 72 times, and Zhu Bajie can change 36 times, which adds up to 108 changes. Buddhism believes that people have 108 different kinds of worries. Ringing the bell 108 times can relieve people’s worries. In addition to ringing the bell, the monk also recited the sutra 108 times and moved 108 Buddhist beads while reciting the sutra, which all showed his sincere respect for the Buddha.
The number of days it took Tang Monk to obtain scriptures was 5048
There is also a magical number 5048 in Journey to the West. This number is the number of days Tang Monk used to obtain scriptures. In fact, Tang Monk only spent 5040 days, but Guanyin Bodhisattva said: the total is 14 years, which is 5040 days, which is still less. Eight days did not add up to the hidden number. Later, Tang Monk spent another eight days on his way back, a total of exactly 5048. Buddhism has the concept of a number of Tibetans. The original meaning of Tibetan refers to the collection of Buddhist scriptures. The Tathagata said this when preaching the sutras, saying that I now have three Tibetan scriptures, which can transcend suffering and explain disasters. Tripitaka: “Dharma” One Tibetan Book is for talking about the sky, one Tibetan Book of “Lun” is for talking about the earth, and one Tibetan Book for “Sutra” is for saving ghosts. These are the three scriptures that Monk Tang followed, totaling 5048 volumes, so Monk Tang is also called Sanzang of Tang Dynasty.
The weight of the golden hoop is 13,500 kilograms
The weapons of Bajie and Sha Seng weigh 5,048 kilograms, which is also consistent with Yi Zang’s number, but Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel weighs 13,500 kilograms. So what does the number 13,500 mean? It is no accident that Sun Wukong’s golden cudgel weighs 13,500 kilograms. According to the “Huangdi Neijing”, a person breathes 13,500 times a day and a night. This number of 13,500 means that the Golden Cudgel, like Sun Wukong’s breath, can communicate with one’s own mind, so it can be big or small, long or short. , can change freely, so Sun Wukong’s golden hoop is also called the Ruyi golden hoop, which represents people’s thoughts.
Sun Wukong can turn a thousand miles with one somersault
When Tang Monk first started to seek Buddhist scriptures, Zen Master Wuchao taught him the Heart Sutra, and also said to him: “Don’t look far for the Buddha in the Lingshan Mountain. The Lingshan Mountain is only in your heart.” Sun Wukong somersaulted thousands of miles. It is exactly the distance to Lingshan Mountain. This means: No matter how far away Lingshan is, it is only a thought away! Good and evil are just a matter of one thought. One thought can make you a Buddha, and one thought can also make you a demon.
The road to learn scriptures is actually the road to cultivating the mind. Although a somersault cloud can travel hundreds of thousands of miles, it cannot reach the true paradise. Therefore, one must hone one’s mind through the hundreds of thousands of miles under one’s feet in order to achieve the right result.
