Speaking of the Rong’s Enterprise during the Republic of China, it was famous. At that time, Rong Zongjing,Rong DeshengThe two brothers started from scratch and founded more than 20 private enterprises in Wuxi, Shanghai and other places. They have been famous in the industrial and commercial circles for decades as the “flour king” and “cotton yarn king” and have a profound influence on China’s national economy. And Rong Desheng’s son wasCommunist Party of Chinacalled “redcapitalist“ofRong Yiren.
The tragic situation of red capitalist Rong Yiren staying in mainland China
Rong Yiren, born in May 1916, graduated from the History Department of Shanghai St. John’s University and later entered the family business. In 1937, he served as assistant manager of Wuxi Maoxin Flour Company. In 1939, he concurrently served as director of Shanghai Hefeng Enterprise Company. In 1943, he concurrently served as director and manager of Shanghai Sanxin Bank. In 1945, he served as manager of Wuxi Maoxin Flour Company.
In the late period of the civil war between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, the currency and price limit policies implemented by the Kuomintang caused serious inflation, and the Rong family also experienced great shock. People in Shanghai’s industrial circles have moved overseas to seek new opportunities, and the Rong family is no exception. Rong Zongjing’s eldest son Rong Hongyuan, Rong Hongsan, Rong Hongqing and Rong Desheng’s sons Rong Erren and Rong Yanren successively left Shanghai, while Rong Desheng and Rong Yiren decided to stay in the mainland after repeated considerations.
It is said that before Rong Erren left his father Rong Desheng and went to Hong Kong, he made an agreement with Rong Yiren: “One will stay in the country and the other will go abroad. If there is no problem, he can come back.” After the establishment of the Communist Party of China, Rong Erren briefly returned to China. But in 1951, he applied to go abroad again and went to the United States. This move saved him from future misfortune.

Although Rong Desheng and Rong Yiren, the father and son who stayed in China, initially received support from the CCP, such as providing raw materials, purchasing products and entrusting processing, etc., the CCP, in order to consolidate its power, under the guise of “implementing public-private joint ventures in private industry and commerce” In the industrial and commercial reform movement that used a banner but actually forcibly plundered private enterprises, he had to force a smile and in 1956, he handed over all 56 textile, flour and other enterprises with assets that his ancestors had worked hard to create. Chen Yi, then the mayor of Shanghai under the Communist Party of China, used him as an example at the conference and declared that “Rong Yiren is a red capitalist.”
Since Rong Yiren has many relatives overseas, in order to confuse the outside world, the CCP adopted a strategy of “praising” Rong Yiren. He first served as deputy mayor of Shanghai in 1957, and then as deputy minister of the Ministry of Textile Industry.
Whether it was because he was frightened by the tragic fate of the entrepreneurs around him, or because he was already aware of the viciousness of the CCP, Rong Yiren applied to join the CCP four times, but was not approved until 1985 when he was 69 years old.
According to Hong Kong’s “Dongxiang” magazine, in June 1951, 35-year-old Rong Yiren first applied to join the party when he was a member of the Finance Committee of the East China Military and Political Commission. When Chen Yi persuaded him, he said it very explicitly: “It is more convenient for you to stay outside the party and you can do more things. In 10 years, when you celebrate your 45th birthday, I will be your introducer to join the party.”
In December 1957, Rong Yiren, who served as deputy mayor of Shanghai after experiencing the “anti-rightist” struggle, felt the urgency of joining the CCP, so he applied to join the party for the second time. But Ke Qingshi, then secretary of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, said: You should stay and work in the democratic parties and the industrial and commercial circles. If you join the party and all the capitalists, big and small, join the party, it will be difficult for me, the municipal party committee secretary, to hold my position properly.
In October 1962, when Rong Yiren was serving as deputy minister of the Ministry of Textile Industry, he once again mentioned to Zhou Enlai that Chen Yishuo introduced him to join the party. Zhou Enlai’s reply was: “Mr. Chen is not breaking his promise. In my opinion, you are still free outside the party. If you enter the party, too many political activities will bury your expertise, which is a pity.”
In the early days of the Cultural Revolution, Rong Yiren’s family was also affected. Rong Yiren’s right index finger was broken by an iron pillar, and his wife Yang Jianqing fainted several times. Even their fourth daughter Zhiyuan, who was mentally disabled due to encephalitis, was not spared. Afterwards, with the intervention of Zhou Enlai, Rong Yiren and his wife finally saved their lives, but Rong Yiren was sent to the boiler room to transport coal and suffered from back pain. The bleeding under his eyes was not treated in time and caused blindness in his left eye. After losing the sight in his left eye, he was assigned to clean toilets.

Rong Desheng applied to quit the party three times and commented on the CCP in his last words
After the Cultural Revolution, the CCP, which was eager to develop its economy, once again thought of the Rong family’s overseas relationships, and Rong Yiren was once again pushed out by the CCP. In 1978, Rong served as vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. In 1979, he became president of China International Trust Investment Corporation, which was directly under the State Council. Rong Yiren relied on his business strategies and overseas relationships to make great contributions to the economic development of the CCP and other countries.
For some unknown reason, in April 1985, 69-year-old Rong Yiren applied to join the Party again, and finally got his wish. The introducers for joining the Party were Wan Li, then Vice Premier of the State Council, and Peng Chong, Vice Chairman of the National People’s Congress. In February 1986, Rong Yiren was an additional member of the Party Leadership Group of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, responsible for economic and democratic party work.
What is unexpected is that Rong Yiren, who finally joined the party, applied to withdraw from the party three times. The first request to quit the party was related to the June Fourth Movement; the second request to quit the party was due to a disagreement with Jiang Zemin; the third request to quit the party was in June 2000, when Rong Yiren had retired and came forward on behalf of major political parties. , proposed to the Political Bureau of the Central Committee a proposal to open up democratic parties to participate in political affairs. Jiang Zemin told him to go away. Rong Yiren was furious and stopped participating in party activities until Jiang stepped down in December 2002.
In October 2005, Rong Yiren passed away in Beijing. He left a last message titled “I Want to Say a Few Words to the Party”, which roughly contains: a political party that has lost faith, a political party that is not bound by the law, a political party that is divorced from the broad masses of the people, and a party that pursues monetary interests. There is no hope for a political party. This party betrays the People’s Republic.
If Rong Yiren were alive today and saw such social chaos and the heinous evil of organ harvesting from living people, he would definitely regret his choice to stay in mainland China.
